This episode is based loosely off of events in chapter 46 of the manga. It introduces Banpei-kun.
Before I start off I must point out that this episode, in my opinion, came about way too soon. A good amount of events in this episode were altered due to the new timeline, and most of the changes are ones that are not pleasing to myself, personally. With that said, I'll continue on.
It's interesting to point out that Skuld is still wearing her Goddess Standard dress, while both Belldandy and Urd now have regular Earthling clothes. What I noticed, however, is that Skuld's not wearing shoes or socks in the house now. This surpised me because in the OVA, she still wore her shoes. I'm curious to see if Skuld changes her dress in the future.
The opening of this episode is very different from the manga. In the manga, Skuld began building Banpei because Marller was around, and she was wondering why nobody else was very worried about Marller. This is also because Marller reappeared recently in the manga, after an absence due to the Lord of Terror events. Also, later in the episode Skuld comes face to face with Marller, but they've never met in the anime prior to this episode. I personally found this a bit sloppy. The point of building Banpei to protect Belldandy is more heavily emphasized in the anime, in my opinion.
In the manga, Keiichi originally was installing software into a computer he salvaged in a junk yard, rather than trying to organize data for one of his professors. Urd's fascination with Big Z is unchanged.
When Skuld introduces Banpei to Urd and Keiichi, she didn't originally go into a huge spiel about the household chore features and such that Banpei was equipped to do. After Urd badmouths Banpei and was ducking in terror (that part wasn't animated very well, in my opinion), Banpei proceeds directly to attack Mara rather than help Belldandy with her laundry.
The absence of Senbei the Demon is absent in this episode, because they skipped the manga chapter that he appeared (it's unclear whether or not he even will appear, despite the fact that he's shown in the opening sequence). Regardless, Marller searching through for potions (what is she now, Urd?) was funny.
I found this part to be really dumb. In the manga, there's reasonable doubt that Belldandy didn't hear Urd telling Skuld to turn Banpei off (because she's concerned about Marller), but in the anime she's right in front of the two and she wonders later why Banpei is turned off! Honestly, that was really sloppy.
The conversation between Belldandy and Banpei took place right when Belldandy decided to create a booster circuit for Banpei in the manga, not before. In fact, in the manga, Belldandy is the one responsible for wanting to and making the booster circuit, not Skuld. Keiichi even helped Belldandy to install it into Banpei in the manga. This is absent in the anime; Skuld works on it alone.
The reason this change seems completely pointless and counterproductive to me is because in the manga, it's insinuated that Banpei used the booster circuit that Belldandy made for him to rewrite his programming and create emotion circuits. Skuld making a booster circuit and having him fall in love with Belldandy makes little to no real sense.
The rest of the episode is more or less original material. Skuld and Marller duke it out, Skuld falls down, Banpei detaches himself from the cables in order to save Skuld, etc etc etc. The only things in common the manga has with the anime in this part are that Banpei is disconnected from his power supply, and that he's trying to save Belldandy's lunch.
I swear, it looks like Skuld wanted Marller to give her a hug. Belldandy being clueless on the phone makes her more ditzy than necessary, in my opinion.
In the manga, Belldandy forgets the lunch when Keiichi grabs her and takes her to the campus in order to talk to her without being chased like crazy. Banpei unhooks himself in order to take the lunch to Belldandy, and his memory is wiped clean when his battery runs out. I guess the animators just wanted to draw some action or something.
Seems like the anime will take a step backward, because the scenes in the next episode seem like it covers chapter 45.
